This poem was written for my goddaughter. Through no fault, our lives separated for a large number of years, and I missed all of her childhood and young adulthood. The thoughts here express my regret at the relationship we did not have.

I am so sorry
that I didn’t keep my promise
to be part of your life;
that I wasn’t around
as a godmother might.

I am so sorry
that I didn’t see your first steps
and smiles of surprise;
the stages you achieved
while you were a child.

I am so sorry
that I didn’t support you
in your times of concern;
that I wasn’t on side
when you needed a hand.

But I am not sorry
to celebrate today
the milestone you’ve reached;
to be part of your life
and make it complete.
